Divine Sovereign Salvation

By Randall Paul

“The reason why anyone believes in election is, that he finds it in the Bible. No man could ever imagine such a doctrine-for it is, in itself, contrary to the thinking and the wishes of the human heart. Everyone, at first, opposes the doctrine, and it is only after many struggles, under the working of the Spirit of God, that we are made to receive it. A perfect acquiescence in this doctrine-an absolute lying still, in adoring wonder, at the footstool of God’s sovereignty, is the last attainment of the sanctified soul in this life as it is the beginning of heaven. The reason why anyone believes in election is just this, and only this, that God has made it known. Had the Bible been a counterfeit it never could have contained the doctrine of election, for men are too averse to such a thought to give it expression, much more to give it prominence.”
G.S. Bishop

Introduction –

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

I know you don’t have to be here, but I also know that if you are here something or Someone has impressed upon your heart that these truths may be important enough to take some time to contemplate.

Maybe we have talked in the past or maybe you heard some things about me you are not sure of and Holding Handsyou are curious.

Well thanks for stopping by.

This whole website and information is written in layman’s terms to other layman.

What do I mean by “layman’s terms”?

Well, I don’t consider myself a very educated man. Even though I did attend college for a very short time I never graduated and I never went to seminary.

I have studied and read an enormous amount about this subject on my own accord.

I believe I am also writing to ones who have not had a formal education and hopefully I am not writing over people’s heads. I hope and pray I am explaining myself in a down to earth, so to speak, fashion so any normal church member, and us common folk, can understand.

I hope and pray that you will be able to say the same about me as Acts 4:13 did about the Apostles Peter and John…

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.”Acts 4:13

When I first was learning these truths I was terrified!

How or why, you may ask?

Well, I was afraid of being led astray of false doctrine.

That’s right.

After I genuinely had gotten saved I had a keen desire to know the truth and truly began to seek God in a way I never did in the past.

I hated myself and my sin and I wanted to have a more fulfilled Christian joy.

I first, before even knowing anything about these truths was simply just seeking more of Christ.

(I don’t mean we get doses of Christ as we go through life. I know the bible teaches that at the moment of salvation we receive ALL of Christ, He does not come in doses and He is never divided in His offices either. When we get saved He becomes our Savior AND OUR LORD! He becomes the Master and Ruler of our lives or He becomes nothing.)

I just wanted more out of my Christian faith. I wanted to be real in my Christian faith and I knew that most all of my life playing the Churchianity game, I wasn’t.

All of this can only be contributed to God working a work of “New Creation” in my heart. I was Do Not Signgenuinely afraid of these doctrines because I was told, in the circles I was in for the past 30 plus  years, that they were “Bad Doctrine”.

Not only did I want to learn more of Gods truth but curiosity got the best of me. I was curious as to why people thought these were bad doctrines.

Because I heard that they were bad doctrine and not WHY they were I went on a quest to find out more, NEVER expecting to have my life totally turned upside down.

But the Word of God is sharper then a two edged sword and it pierces deep. It pierces deep into our humanness and strips away pride more then we want to admit because of our fallen human nature.

It’s not that I lost all my pride and that I became Mr. Super Humble.

By no means have I ever gotten over my sinful pride. I can only cry out with the Apostle Paul when he says in Romans 7:24 “O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death” Then he answers himself in the next verse, verse 25 “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord”

…and I say Praise God Whom all blessing flow!

If you are a Christian then you know as well as I do that it is impossible to live in this kind of world that we live in, without the provision and watch care of our Almighty Protective Father!

I am so grateful to God for His boundless love. Why He would love me after all of my selfish living I will never know. And, I am by no means beyond that kind of living either.

I can only pray He is willing to use me now.

And that is exactly why I began writing all that you are reading now.

I have learned some most glorious truths from Gods word that I never took the time to learn in the past and no one was interested in guiding me to them either.

Basically, it was all in Gods providential timing. I really wasn’t ready to go deeper into Gods precious Word and mine these truths out until just the last few years of my life.

I hope you also can at this time, be ready for God’s Word to open up to you and pierce your heart. “And ye shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free” John 8:32

It is literally my prayer for you…

“…that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power…”(Eph. 1:17-19)

Now…

I am writing this based on the understanding that you believe that the “Bible” 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament, is The Word of God the Holy Scriptures.

I have made the choice to believe that Gods inspired, infallible and inerrant Word is the Holy Bible consisting of only and all of these 66 books.

I know other faiths have added books to their bible but I reject those other books as Gods Word.

Those other books may be useful as historical books and we may be able to glean some needed information from some of them but they are not on the same level as the compiled inspired cannon of scripture in the 66 books of the Holy Bible which is Gods Revelation to mankind.

We could go back and argue if there is even a god in the first place. Or maybe there are multiple gods?

We are way beyond those arguments here and I am writing this, I believe to Christians, ones who have placed their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for Who He is, the Incarnate, Creator God of this universe and believe the bible, the cannon of Scripture in these 66 books as the infallible and inerrant Revelation of Truth from God to mankind. (see 2 Tim. 3:16)

Gods Sovereignty –

The Oxford Dictionaries definition of the word Sovereign = “A supreme Ruler, especially a Monarch” (Monarch = from Greek monarkhēs, from monos ‘alone’ + arkhein ‘to rule’.

“That God is Sovereign means that He does as He pleases and only as He pleases. No person or circumstance can defeat His counsel or thwart His purposes” Dr. John MacArthur / Our Awesome God

“Remember the former things of old; for I AM God, and there is none other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying ‘My counsel shall stand and I will accomplish all My pleasure, calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth My counsel from a far country. Yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.” Isaiah 46: 9-11

“Divine sovereignty is a vast subject: it embraces everything that comes into the biblical picture of God as Lord and King in His world, the One who ‘worketh all things after the counsel of his own will’ (Ephesians 1:11), directing every process and ordering every event for the fulfilling of His own eternal plan.” J.I. Packer Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God

”If there is any element of the universe that is outside of his authority, then he no longer is God over all. In other words, sovereignty belongs to deity. Sovereignty is a natural attribute of the Creator. God owns what he makes, and he rules what he owns.” R.C. Sproul / Now That’s a Good Question.

“…for all are thy servants” Psalm 119:91 (the meaning of this verse is “all things”)

“I AM the LORD, and there is none else; there is no God besides Me. I girded thee, though thou hast not known Me, that they know from the raising of the sun and from the west that there is none besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is none else. I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create evil; I, the LORD do all these things.” Isaiah 45: 5-7

More verses on the Sovereignty of God – Ex. 4:11, Ex. 15:18, Dan 4:35, Dan 7:14, Jer. 32:27, Isa. 45:5-7, Isa. 46:10, Ps. 33:10, Ps. 115:3, Ps. 135:6, Lam. 3:37-38, Matt. 19:26, Matt. 10:30, Luke 1:37, Acts. 17:26, Eph. 1:1, Eph. 1:19-21, Rev. 11:15, Rev. 19:1, 6.

Gods Sovereignty in Salvation –

Red heart“Regeneration is the spiritual change wrought in the heart of man by the Holy Spirit in which his/her inherently sinful nature is changed so that he/she can respond to God in Faith, and live in accordance with His Will (Matt. 19:28; John 3:3,5,7; Titus 3:5). It extends to the whole nature of man, altering his governing disposition, illuminating his mind, freeing his will, and renewing his nature.” J.I. Packer / Regeneration

I believe that regeneration is the work of God alone and is a Monergistic work.

Monergism = “In theology, the doctrine that the Holy Spirit is the only efficient agent in regeneration that the human will possesses no inclination to holiness until regenerated, and therefore cannot cooperate in regeneration.” The Century Dictionary’s definition. (see Rom. 8:7-8)

To read more on the Monergism / Synergism debate go here.

“…Salvation is of the LORD” Jonah 2:9.

“But the salvation of the righteous is in the LORD; He is their strength in time of trouble.” Psalm 37:39

Ultimately, the ones who God saves are the ones He elected before time began that one day in time, come to a knowledge of the Truth…

“even as He chose us in Him” (Eph. 1;4) (for salvation as well as to be holy and without blame before Him) “before the foundation of the world” (Eph 1:4) (before we were ever born and before time on this earth ever began, God made a conscience choice to set His love on ME and you as Christians)

and…

“as many as were ordained to eternal life believed” (Acts 13:48) (the ESV uses the word “appointed” only those who were appointed to eternal life believed)

as well as…

“For unto you it is given (or granted) on behalf of Christ… to believe.”(Phil. 1:29), and lastly…

“we” (again, those who are in Christ, ones who are saved) “have obtained an inheritance being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who works all things after the counsel of His own will…” (Eph.1:11) (Predestinate can mean something planned or arranged in the past)

That last verse says who’s will?

HIS will!

Who does “His will” refer back to?

It refers back to verse 3 of chapter 1 which says, “…the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”

So then, we who are in Christ have been predestined (planned or arranged in the past) and obtained from God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ an inheritance… (this would be salvation, eternal life, a home in heaven and so much more we could never comprehend)

How?

“…according to the purpose of Him who works all things”

How many things?

“…all things”

“…after the counsel of His own will”

Again, who’s will are all these things worked according to?God_Heart

God’s will!

It specifically says God’s will and not mans will, doesn’t it?

John 1:12 says “to them” (God’s elect, the ones He chose to receive salvation, to those who believe) “gave He power (or the RIGHT) to become the sons of God”. Or, He gave these certain select ones (not everyone) the RIGHT to “believe in His name”.

As an unregenerate, depraved, sinner we had NO right to God in any way as He is unapproachable Light. 1 Tim. 6:16. We were “dead in our trespasses and sins.” Eph 2:1.  Yet, “while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

As an elect child of God clothed in the righteousness of Christ, imputed unto us by Gods un-measurable Grace, we now have been given the “power to become the sons of God“. We have been given the RIGHT to believe on His Name when before this time, as an unregenerate sinner, we had no right.

John 1:13b continues, “…not of the will of men but of God”

We would never be able to come to Him in the first place even if we thought we would want to, if God didn’t first give us a heart of flesh through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit.

“With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” Matt 19:26

“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:26

“The concept of being made a Christian by something one can do is essentially a natural human disposition. …’decisional regeneration’. It’s origins need to be traced and its philosophy examined.” Rev. Kenneth Good

Conclusion –

I think we can see just from these few small verses above that God in His sovereignty and power, uninfluenced from anything outside Himself, chose us, appointed us, granted us, predestinated us and gave us the right to become the children of God all before the foundation of the world.

So basically we should be able to see from these scripture verses just from their literal exegesis, that God is the one doing the choosing of the ones that He wants to have populate heaven and become holy and blameless one day.

Being born again, (Eph 2:5) the new birth, is a Monergistic work.

Remember now, as we will see in more depth in other articles that the Scriptures tell us that we are spiritually dead in our trespasses and sins and an offense to a Holy Righteous and Sovereign God!

The Reformers and historic church fathers believed in the total depravity or the total inability of church 2mankind since the fall of Adam and Eve. We know the Apostle Paul addressed this very thing in Romans chp. 3

Saving faith then is “not of yourselves, it is the gift of God” Eph. 2:8 and then it says that “…we are ‘His’ workmanship” and 1 Cor. 1:30 tells us that we are in Christ by Gods doing.

“A man is not saved because he believes in Christ; He believes in Christ because he is saved” Loraine Boettner

“Faith is simply breathing the breath that God’s Grace supplies” Dr. John MacArthur

When, as a child of the King we think of and contemplate on the high and lofty subject of Gods infinite divine sovereign salvation from the Truth of Scripture, even with our finite minds we should, through the illumination of the Spirit of God be able to see the biblical Truth that God is monergistic in His work of our Salvation.

If for some reason you are still struggling with these deep truths of scripture call out to our loving and gracious heavenly father to illuminate your mind and soul. Search the scriptures deeper then your daily bible reading to see if these things are so and pray earnestly to our righteous God, and I promise you, if you are truly a child of the King He WILL reveal His truth to you as He has to so many countless of men and women down though the ages of church history.

“What God requires of us he himself works in us, or it is not done. He that commands faith, holiness, and love, creates them by the power of his grace…” Matthew Henry

It is God Who… “freely offereth unto sinners life and salvation by Jesus Christ; requiring of them faith in him, that they may be saved, and promising to give unto all those that are ordained unto eternal life his Holy Spirit, to make them willing, and able to believe.” Westminster Confession of Faith CHAP. VII. / Of God’s Covenant with Man III

  1. Randall,

Thanks for taking the time to share your faith and the truth of God’s real Amazing Grace. For what kind of grace can be more amazing then God choosing us before time, not based on our merits or ability to come to Him, but simply because He loved us before time! How could we choose God when we were dead in trespasses and sins? The Bible tells us that He “made us alive in Christ” when we were dead in sins. Eph. 2:5.

We love Him because He first loved us. I John 4:19

Thanks for sharing and your labors on this site.

    1. Hello Jim, you are so right! Actually any of us who use Scripture as our basis of Truth are right. It’s not my opinion nor yours or anyone else, It is Scriptures opinion or even better it is Gods Word and HIS opinion that matters and not our human reasoning. We may not understand how it all fits together totally and completely this side of Heaven but God knows and shouldn’t we be trusting in HIS Word! It is Satan’s age old practice from the Garden of Eden to get humanity to doubt Gods Word. What we do so often as human beings is inject our reasoning and if it doesn’t match up with our reasoning then we can’t accept it as being true. We think it just doesn’t make sense to us. What we fail to remember is that our reasoning is a fallen reasoning. Our thinking, our desires, our attitudes, our hearts are all still suspect to a fallen world. Yes, as born again believers, as Christians, we are more then over-comers but we still live in the flesh and in a fallen world and if we don’t ultimately submit to and rely on Gods Word alone (Sola Scriptura) and not our so called free will and fallen reasoning we will always error. Thanks for your comments.
